What is a Non- Anesthetic Teeth Scaling for Dogs and Cats?

Non-anesthetic teeth scaling, also known as anesthesia-free dentistry (AFD), is a dental cleaning procedure for pets that don’t involve the use of general anesthesia. Instead, it is done while the pet is awake, but restrained, using hand-held instruments such as scalers, ultrasonic scalers, and curettes to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth. We ask about the history of your pet and do a thorough exam to see if they are eligible to have a Non-Anesthetic Teeth Scaling performed.

This procedure is usually recommended for pets with mild to moderate dental disease or those not healthy enough to undergo anesthesia. However, it is essential to note that non-anesthetic teeth scaling has limitations and may not be as effective as traditional dental cleaning under general anesthesia, especially for pets with severe dental disease.

It’s essential to have regular dental check-ups for your pets and consult with your veterinarian to determine the best approach for your pet’s dental care.

We recommended cleanings every 6 months to keep your pet’s teeth in excellent condition. Remember, maintenance is key!
